February is a sweet time
for Nanaimo residents and visitors when the annual Maple Sugar
Festival du Sucre d’Érable launches into high gear to celebrate
the cultures and traditions of eastern Canada.
For the first time, the 2009 Maple Sugar Festival will kick
start Mid-January with the
Provincial touring school program, which will give students
an opportunity to experience different aspects of the French
Canadian culture in their own school. From February 19-25 the
public will experience an array of activities celebrating
Acadian culture, where audiences will have the opportunity to
see national and local performers, elaborate ice sculpture
creations, visit an art exhibit and a sampling of our famous
trademark mouth watering maple toffee on snow! Friday, the
admission on site is by donation, creating opportunities for
everyone to take part in the event. Saturday afternoon will
feature the festivals first international artist, “New Orleans
own Rockin’ Fiddler”, Waylon
Thibodeaux. Don’t miss our
Lumberjack Breakfast and our provincial talent contest
Toffy’s Idol Contest. The festival will wrap up at the Port
Theatre on February 25 with a fiery performance from the dynamic
group The McDades. This year the
festival is proud to bring you the most high-caliber performers
to date.
Presented by the Francophone Association of Nanaimo (l’AFN) and
Canadian
Maple Delights the Maple Sugar Festival du Sucre d'Érable is
a bilingual event where a fun time is guaranteed for the whole
family.
It’s
a must see, hear and taste experience!
